The Truth About Money and Happiness
You know the saying “Money doesn’t bring you happiness”? Of course you do, unless you have been living under a rock for the majority of your life. The thing is, I guarantee that most of us just scoffed at the notion, thinking to yourself “give me the opportunity to prove it”. Somehow, we still thought that money would help to make us happier. That the source of our unhappiness was the fact that we had financial burdens.
Over the past year, I have made more financially than I have most of my adult life. I have a great career where I get to be creative on a daily and weekly basis, and the job never gets monotonous. I make a good living, I have a growing bank account, but the one thing that didn’t change was my happiness. Despite everything I had, I wasn’t happy. How could this be? I had money. I was getting out of debt, yet, my happiness was still not where I thought it should be or expected. In fact, I felt more unhappy than I did when I was struggling financially.
My happiness was lacking because I was not living my life with any sort of purpose. I was working to make money and be financially independent, but I wasn’t living. I was merely existing, and that made me feel alone, isolated, and unhappy. I wasn’t doing anything to follow my passion. I wasn’t surrounding myself with good people or keeping up with my family. I wasn’t allowing myself to experience joy and fulfillment. That is why I vowed to make a change in 2019 for myself and to start living my life more.
Happiness is not a result of having more money. Money, as I truly discovered, does not bring you more happiness. It just doesn’t. Sure, it can help you pay for more things…but things, do not make you happy. Living your life to the fullest and creating new experiences are what it is about. You do not need to be rich to have these things. You just need to have the willingness to make time for yourself and those that matter most in your life.
If you are not happy with your life, ask yourself this question;
“Am I living my life or am I just existing in it”?
If you are just existing in this plane of existence, start finding ways to focus on areas of your life that matter to you. We have this one life to live. Don’t waste it by simply existing.
